Daniel Radcliffe stars as Weird Al Yankovic in the musical biopic parody of music biopics, WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story.
I tried to put as much silliness into that sentence as possible to prepare you for what’s to come.
Weird Al, a real musician and comedian, is known for his tongue-in-cheek parodies of popular songs and music videos.
He’s a producer and co-writer in WEIRD, so it’s no surprise that the latest trailer for his satirical ‘absolutely true biographical drama’ practically acts as a musical biopic cliché bingo.
We get to see Radcliffe tell the not-so-true story of Al’s famous life as Weird Al himself, who meets Madonna, played by Evan Rachel Wood, a bad influence on Al.
The film goes through a couple of the typical touchstones you might expect in a musician biopic, but all with a silly Weird Al filter:
The movie also stars Rainn Wilson, Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) as Oprah Winfrey, Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Toby Huss (Halt and Catch Fire), Julianna Nicholson (I, Tonya), and Spencer Treat Clark (Agents of SHIELD).
WEIRD is directed by Eric Appel (Silicon Valley) and written by Appel and Al, which is very fitting since Appel previously created a spoof biopic of Yankovic’s life for Funny or Die starring Aaron Paul as Yankovic, per Screen Rant.
Just so you can get a proper idea, here’s one of Al Yankovic’s real spoof songs, ‘Amish Paradise’:
WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story pokes around, taking serious creative liberties with biographical events in order to tell the wild story where “the world belongs to the weird”.
Audiences will be able to enter Al’s world on November 4.
