A Cape Town woman’s recent Uber trip has become the subject of much discussion.
A video of the trip has been doing the rounds on Twitter, showing the unidentified driver confronting the female passenger for allegedly offering her body to settle the unpaid Uber bill.
The part where she apparently made the sexual offer in order to pay for the trip didn’t feature in the video, but the driver referred to the unconventional payment method as they discussed a way forward.
The South African reported that the Uber driver parked outside a Nedbank and filmed the exchange to rule out any wrongdoing on his part, claiming that the passenger said ‘he could touch her’ in exchange for the service provided.
While the passenger discussed making the payment if she was allowed to leave the car, charge her phone, and make an electronic transfer, the driver suggested going to the police in order to resolve the matter:

It is unclear what happened after the video was taken.
Per The Daily Voice, Mpho Sebelebele, head of communications for Uber in South Africa, says:
“What has been described is shocking and regrettable and is in clear violation of our community guidelines. The incident that has been captured hasn’t been reported on the app by either the rider or the driver.”
While it’s unclear why the woman allegedly thought she could use Uber without any money to pay for the trip, this incident is actually a reversal of what many women experience when making use of e-hailing taxi apps.
All too often, it is the woman rider who is on the receiving end of unwanted advances from male drivers.
