Every Capetonian knows there are parts of the N2 that are best navigated on high alert.
In fact, the stretch of highway from Somerset West heading towards Borcherds Quarry Road en route to Cape Town International Airport has become notorious, reports Wheels24.
You might have seen the dashcam footage that went viral earlier this month, showing four men stopping a vehicle and robbing the family inside.
For those who haven’t, here’s what you missed:
The best we can do is learn from watching these incidents to try and ensure we never find ourselves in a similar situation.
Eugene Hubert, CEO of advanced driver training company MasterDrive, offers this advice:
• Looking 12 – 15 seconds ahead of the road would have enabled the driver to see if there was a potential problem and if he needed to stop or react long before the time. In other words, don’t drive into the situation.
• There was sufficient time for the driver to have taken evasive action when the first man stepped into the road – don’t ever stop.
• Draw attention to what’s happening – blow your car’s hooter and keep moving. If need be, move into the emergency lane.
In addition, Hubert says doors should be locked and windows closed when driving in areas where these incidents are known to occur.
Arrive Alive’s Johan Jonck said the video is a sad reminder of the need to always remain vigilant and advised the following:
• Don’t leave any valuables such as handbags and backpacks within clear sight of anyone approaching your vehicle. Always try and lock your property in your boot.
• If you find yourself heading into the path of a crowd, and it is possible – turn down the nearest side road, reverse or turn around and drive away calmly.
• Don’t be seen using your cellphone. Most cars have Bluetooth connectivity so that you can keep your mobile device out of sight.
He also stresses that “your life is irreplaceable and worth more than any earthly possession”.
You can buy a new phone or wallet.
If you are involved in a hijacking or robbery like the one above, phone the SAPS immediately on 10111. If your vehicle has a tracking device, activate it as soon as possible.
