Over the weekend, reports broke that Lee Thompson had been kicked out of a room he had been renting in a guesthouse in Cape Town’s CBD.
The owner of the guesthouse described how the star of the first season of The Bachelor SA left the room looking “as if a bomb had exploded”.
Things came to a head one night when she received a call that a tenant “had gone crazy” and allegedly found Thompson trashing the room. The woman claims Thompson admitted he has “a problem”, calling him a “nice guy, but he’s lost it”.
In a follow-up this morning, Channel24 says Thompson is in rehab:
…the 34-year-old has been taken to a rehabilitation centre in Gauteng by family and friends – his second stint in rehab at the same centre.
A friend said the fear is that Thompson might not stay long enough: “His mom wasn’t aware that things got so bad again. Lee is good with hiding and pretending that everything’s okay. I hope this lasts and that this is now his rock bottom.”
Thompson has yet to publicly comment on the recent reports and he has not posted on social media since last Thursday.
With his name back in the news, accusations that Thompson swindled people out of money regarding a tell-all book he has been promoting have surfaced. Multiple women have spoken about paying for the book via pre-order, only to be ignored or blocked by Thompson when trying to follow up.
A charity he claimed to have started, which would benefit from 10% of all book sales, doesn’t appear to exist.
Last November, he admitted the book, The Truth Behind The Rose, had been delayed due to “a few possible legal matters which have taken a little longer than expected”.
A person who has worked with Thompson on various campaigns told Channel24 the former TV star “did not even own a phone a few months ago – that’s how bad things got”.
What’s important now is that he appears to be getting the help he needs to start on the road to recovery.
