Moments of irony are some of life’s greatest pleasures.
How can you not let the corners of your mouth curl into a smile after witnessing a man steal a bag on a beach right as a tourist is talking about why he loves the area on a TV broadcast?
Besides the crime part, it is a pretty amusing situation.
A team from Spain’s TVE state broadcaster were filming an interview with a tourist, who launched into a complimentary speech about why he loves Barcelona for its “beautiful beach and clean, cold water” when they unwittingly recorded a theft.
The culprit, seemingly completely oblivious to the TV crew and camera, is seen snatching an unattended bag from the sand and walking away.
The owner of the missing goods then starts desperately searching for his bag, obviously shaken and calling for help, but the tourist raves on and the cameras keep recording as if nothing much is happening.
You have to see it to believe it:
Despite the surprising lack of action at the moment the theft happened, the footage was later used to track down the thief and retrieve some of the stolen loot, per The Telegraph:
“Thanks to a video published […] on social media and the victim’s complaint, today we identified and charged the perpetrator of a theft on Sant Miquel beach,” Barcelona’s Guàrdia Urbana police force said on Sunday.
Apparently, Barcelona has become a bit of a hotspot for street crime. According to police figures, between January and the end of May, around 225 thefts were recorded per day in the Catalan city.
Well, you still gotta love Barcelona.
That tourist sure does.
