Netflix confirmed in January that its hugely popular show Squid Game would be renewed for a second season.
All hail the K-drama gods.
Later, in June, the world was given a little taste of what’s to come with a frustratingly quick teaser alongside a message from creator, writer, director, and executive producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk.
He mentioned at the time that the same protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), and the masked antagonist the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) would be returning in the follow-up season.
Now further hints have been revealed, with the mention of how Gi-hun will be a “totally new person” following the events of season one.
Hwang has stated that fans can expect a continuation of the story they already know and love, per Looper:
“The philosophies I put in season one all naturally extend to season two. Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next,” he said, saying that Gi-hun became a totally different character by the end of the first season, and the second season will explore his new outlook and actions.
Bring it on:

There is a small possibility that the new season will include a look at the games from other countries, as hinted at in season one:
Hwang said that “Squid Game” was always meant to be expanded. The show’s creator said, “That was actually part of my intentions from the outset. I wrote the script in a way to hint that the Squid Game was happening in other parts of the world. As you can see from the conversations that the VIPs are having, they say the Korean game this year is spectacular, which means that there are other games as well.”
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos did say in January that “the Squid Game universe has just begun,” although, he could have been referring to the reality version of the games.
The streamer has been putting feelers out for 456 participants to compete in a life-changing reality TV show based on the series.
