The mere mention of the word ‘Ibiza’ conjures up images of DJs spinning the decks and wild parties that run through to the early morning.
Julius Malema sure had a good time during his recent visit for the wedding of tobacco kingpin Adriano Mazzotti’s daughter.
Perhaps the most famous party venue of all is Pacha, the nightclub which opened way back in June 1973 and started Ibiza’s ‘party island’ reputation.
Goldfish fans will definitely recognise that name. Can you believe it’s been 14 years since Perceptions of Pacha was released? No, you’re old.
Anyway, one man can lay claim to the birth of the party scene in Ibiza, reports the BBC:
Other clubs with the capacity to fit thousands of people on the dance floor opened in the years after, turning Ibiza into a destination for music and party lovers from around the world.
Carlos Martorell tells BBC Witness History how he came to the island in the 1960s and spotted its potential. He then went on to organise Pacha’s opening night party.
As far as claims to fame go, that’s quite a big one:
Perhaps only Tony Pike, who passed away in February 2019, has more wild partying stories to tell than Martorell.
Pike was dubbed the “ringmaster for 30 years of celebrity debauchery” and his hotel was the favourite hangout of icons like Freddie Mercury, George Michael, Grace Jones, and Julio Iglesias.
