Happy Throwback Thursday to everyone except Mr. Visagie.
Let me take you on a journey back in time…
The year was 2010, and South Africa was gearing up to host the FIFA World Cup, which would help unite the country for a few glorious months.
Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) secretary-general André Visagie, however, wasn’t feeling the ubuntu leading up to the tournament.
During an appearance on Africa 360, a current affairs show on eNews, Visagie had something of a run-in with political commentator Lebohang Pheko.
Also in the mix was host Chris Maroleng, who then became involved in a back and forth that has become legendary in South Africa.
Fun drinking game – every time someone asks that somebody refrains from making physical contact with them whilst on set, have a sip.
We’ll see you on the other side:
Iconic.
Visagie starts to leave, doesn’t get the reaction he’s after when nobody tries to step in, and is then forced to up the ante.
Nice of him to overtly state his racism at the end there, too.
This incident received a number of remixes (as South Africans love to do), including the obvious MC Hammer connection:
As you would imagine, this exchange cracked that A to Z list of South African memes.
Rightly so.
