Who’s up for another Netflix true-crime docuseries with a twist?
Patricide is the act of killing one’s own father, which is at the centre of the new three-part docuseries, I Just Killed My Dad.
The series focuses on the true story of Anthony Templet, a teenager in Louisiana who shot and killed his father in June 2019. The title is derived from the 911 call he made shortly afterwards, confessing to the operator, “I just killed my dad. I shot him three times.”
Some of the basics of the story below, via The Independent:
Investigators found that there were no signs of a physical struggle or evidence that the shooting had been carried out in self-defence.
However, lawyers for Templet argued that he had suffered over a decade of abuse at the hands of his father. His stepmother, Susan Templet, and other family members pushed for him to avoid a prison sentence.
The series was released yesterday and online, the reaction has been swift.
Before we touch on that, here’s the trailer:
If you’re on the fence about watching the docuseries, you may be swayed by the fact that it’s directed by Skye Borgman.
She also directed Abducted in Plain Sight and Girl in the Picture and is renowned as a master of the genre.
Social media users have called I Just Killed My Dad “insane” and “nucking futs” (I’m sure you can figure that one out), while someone just two episodes in wrote, “my mind is completely blown”.
Why don’t you just finish all three episodes and then share an opinion? Kids these days have no idea how to binge.
The Guardian, in a four-star review, called the docuseries “every bit as hooky and twisty as you’d expect from Netflix”:
By the end of the set-up, all the primitive bits of your brain are baying for blood. It’s so clear! SO clear!
Even though you know, even though your rational brain is telling you it can’t, it won’t be that simple, that the whole point, the absolute raison d’etre of true crime documentaries is the pivot that turns everything upside down – you are convinced. That – however unethically when you are talking about the death of one and the suffering of (usually) many others – is the fun of it.
No twists shall be revealed here.
I Just Killed My Dad is currently streaming. Off you go, then.
