Netflix’s upcoming limited series about a lost toy who braves the many dangers of childhood during an epic adventure to reunite with the boy who lost him sounds strikingly similar to another toy-filled story.
Toy Story, yes, that’s the one.
Indeed, Lost Ollie, inspired by the book Ollie’s Odyssey by author and illustrator William Joyce, touches on that classic tight bond between a toy and its human.
Except Lost Ollie will be bleaker, according to Collider, noting the protagonist who looks and sounds a little melancholic, too.
We’re also in for more of a visual spectacle with the excellent blend of CGI and stop-motion animation that brings Ollie and his toy friends to life.
Here’s a sneak peek:
According to animation veteran and series creator Shannon Tindle, the emotionally-wrenching family series is “an opportunity” to subvert the classic children’s tale, reported Entertainment Weekly:
“It was an opportunity rather than an obstacle to have people imagine that this is something more akin to Toy Story, and maybe even Homeward Bound. That way, we could continue to surprise them because the tone has a wide range. Here’s the setup, here’s the big adventure, here’s the fun in episode 1. We continue that quest in episode 2. And then we start to gut punch you a little bit with things that happen to Ollie.”
The voiceover artists include Mary J Blige, Jonathan Groff, and Tim Blake Nelson, with Gina Rodriguez and Jake Johnson in starring roles as mommy and daddy.
Lost Ollie is coming to Netflix with four episodes from August 24.
