Plenty of stories about Michael Jackson point to how troubled the late pop star was.
Leaving Neverland, the documentary about a large portion of his life spent allegedly sexually abusing minors, is among the worst of them, with snippets of alleged sordid secrets coming from his former ‘maid’ filling in a few gaps.
Now, Sir Elton John’s new autobiography, Me: Elton John, contains some revelations about his late pal, noted Woman’s Health.
Although John doesn’t exactly delve into the Leaving Neverland theme, he does allude to Jackson’s particular obsession with children, writing, “For whatever reason, he couldn’t seem to cope with adult company at all.”
Another part of the book has John opening up about his fellow musician and his struggle with addiction, comparing the ‘King of Pop’ to the ‘King of Rock and Roll’ Elvis Presley.
Here’s Rock Celebrities:
“I’d known Michael since he was 13 or 14. He was just the most adorable kid you could imagine. But at some point in the intervening years, he started sequestering himself away from the world and reality, the way Elvis Presley did.
God knows what was going on in his head and what prescription drugs he was being pumped full of, but every time I saw him in his later years, I came away thinking that the poor guy had lost his marbles.
I don’t mean that in a lighthearted way. He was genuinely mentally ill, a disturbing person to be around.”
The difference between describing someone as crazy and funny is miles apart from calling someone “genuinely mentally ill”.
John must have sensed the instability under the surface, feeling perturbed by him, which is not at all surprising considering Jackson’s controversial behaviour.
John’s other revelations pick apart his feud with Tina Turner, his relationship with Queen Elizabeth, and the time he criticised Bob Dylan’s fashion sense.
There’s also a moment when he described his special friendship with Princess Diana, as well as a dinner party at which Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere almost fought over winning her affections.
