For the first time since 1966, an English football team has claimed a major tournament victory.
Just to sweeten the deal, England’s Lionesses once again ousted the Germans en route to glory, securing a 2-1 win and the Euro 2022 title thanks to Chloe Kelly’s extra-time goal.
There was a moment of uncertainty as VAR was consulted before the goal was officially awarded, and then Kelly and her teammates set off on an iconic celebration run:

Jubilant scenes followed on the pitch and ‘Sweet Caroline’ was belted out by the players and the 87 192 fans in attendance at Wembley.
That’s a record crowd size for either the men’s or women’s final of the tournament:

Then it was manager Sarina Wiegman’s turn to face the media in the post-match press conference.
Finally, English players and fans alike can unironically sing ‘football’s coming home’. The former were in full voice as they sauntered into the room and, in the case of Lucy Bronze and Mary Earps, danced on the table:
The Dutch coach has now won back-to-back European Championships, having guided the Netherlands to victory in 2017.
It was also notable that, as opposed to the men’s Euro 2020 final which took place last year (COVID-19 changed the date but not the name), there were no ugly scenes of violence outside the stadium.
Enjoy it, England.
