To say that the antivirus founder-turned-fugitive John McAfee’s life was crazy is actually an understatement.
It was pure, unadulterated chaos.
Netflix’s new documentary tries to trace some of the madness, following him as he went on the run after becoming a suspect in the 2012 murder of his neighbour in Belize.
McAfee clearly wanted to create a story out of his life that would leave people scratching and shaking their heads in various states of disbelief, asking a crew of journalists and filmmakers to document his every move evading US authorities and Mexican cartels.
The Verge reports that Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee is loaded with guns, drugs, and alcohol as the group of journalists negotiate through Belize, Guatemala, and eventually the Bahamas.
Roll tape:
McAfee might have escaped to the island paradise, but he could not escape himself:
After making a name for himself as the creator of the McAfee antivirus software company — which Intel acquired in 2021 — things started to go downhill when police in Belize pegged him as a person of interest in the murder of his neighbor, Gregory Faull.
From then on, McAfee’s actions just got more bizarre: he got into crypto; attempted to run for president; and even developed a “hack-proof” phone. In 2020, he was arrested in Spain for tax evasion and was later found dead in his prison cell before he was extradited to the US. His death was ruled a suicide.
The film – which has been “10 years in the making” according to documentary production studio Curious Films’ co-founder, Dov Freedman – will be on Netflix from August 24.
