It is wise of someone to admit that they do not know everything.
Like me, when I came across this video of a man “glissading”. I had no idea that the extreme sport existed, let alone that people actively participated.
Glissading is the act of descending a steep mountain of snow, or a scree-covered slope, via a controlled slide on one’s feet or buttocks.
Okay, so that one time I accidentally went to the expert peak at a snow skiing range in Japan and made my way down exclusively by butt was some form of glissading.
Good to know.
This hiker would have been better off if he also adopted the “I don’t know everything” mindset, because then he might have worn a helmet as he glissaded down a mountain at Big Sky, Montana.
Instead, he slipped out of control, narrowly avoiding serious injury or worse as he tumbled over sharp rocks just over 200 metres down a mountain.
Advnture reported that the man was trying to get to some rocks further down the mountain when he hit a snow-packed patch that was too densely frozen, destabilising him completely and sending him on his not-so-merry way:
“Once it became apparent that I could not stop myself, I did my best to avoid any vital body parts from hitting the rocks on the way down,” he said.
He captured the whole scene on his action camera:
Somehow he managed to get down and back to his car with a fractured ankle, a damaged tendon in his foot, and lacerations on his side, which were discovered when he went to the hospital afterwards.
For the record, this is how not to glissade.
One should always wear a helmet for starters, as well as some kind of cover for your arms and hands.
Then carrying an ice axe is also advised so that if you land up in a similar situation as this man, you can arrest the fall pretty quickly.
Now you know.
