Being on the frontline in the fight against crime is dangerous work.
This past weekend, we were served with a reminder that every time security guards and armed response vehicles are out and about, they are putting their lives at risk.
Two separate attacks, in Harfield Village and Claremont, on Saturday night saw two security guards being shot.
One of the men died while the other was injured, reports News24:
Police responded to an attack on First Avenue in Harfield Village at 21:19 on Saturday night.
“They found a male person inside a vehicle who sustained gunshot wounds to his body. It is believed that the victim was disarmed in the process,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi in a statement…
The fatal shooting was reported at approximately 21:50 in Herschel Close, Claremont.
In the fatal shooting, Swartbooi again said it appeared likely the victim had been disarmed.
It’s unclear which shooting is captured below. What it does show is how little fear these suspects have when it comes to robbing patrol vehicles:
No arrests have been made, with the gunmen fleeing the scene and Claremont police now investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
With SAPS notoriously tardy when responding to calls for help, these security officers are often the first to arrive on the scene and put themselves in harm’s way.
Wahl Bartmann, CEO of the Fidelity Services Group, said the company is “deeply saddened” by the attacks and “will provide SAPS our full cooperation to make sure that the attackers are found and prosecuted”.
A campaign has been set up on Donate Nation to support the families of the two patrollers.
