If large swathes of the media weren’t already portraying Meghan Markle to be a nasty piece of work, then Tom Bower’s new book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, certainly is.
As a royal autobiographer, Bower makes several damning claims about Meghan and Prince Harry, as well as other royals, getting the inside scoop from everyone other than those who are actually inside (he didn’t actually speak to the Sussexes).
He lays out some serious bombshells, which The Mirror reports will “rock the Royal Family” and “cause further divides between the two factions”.
The book has already ragged on Camilla Parker Bowles for making a “racist” remark about what Meghan and Harry’s future child’s hair would look like.
Next up is the Beckhams. Apparently, the two famous couples had a massive falling out after the Sussexes accused the Beckhams of leaking stories about them to the press, Bower alleges.
Marie Claire reported that according to Bower, the Sussexes became “addicted” to reading about themselves in the media, frantic about whether their secrets were getting out to the British press through their famous friends.
Thus they apparently obsessively tried to figure out who the mole amongst their inner circle might be:
“Harry and Meghan were shackled,” Bower writes. “Every night they scoured the internet to read the newspaper reports and the trolls’ postings on social media. Irrationally, they grouped the two together and fed each other’s frenzy about the media.”
…Meghan allegedly “suspected Victoria Beckham of indiscretion,” Bower writes, the author also noting that “Harry’s instability fed Meghan’s fears that friends were leaking stories to the media,” The Mirror reports. Meghan’s reported accusation of Victoria led to a tense phone call between Harry and David, the book claims.
“Harry called David Beckham to repeat the accusation,” Bower writes. “Outraged, Beckham’s truthful denials damaged their relationship.”
A source reflected on this situation with The Sun in 2020, saying that “Harry was very polite, but obviously it was a pretty awkward exchange and David was mortified”. The two men reportedly agreed to move on, as awkward as things would then be.
The Beckhams even attended the Sussex wedding in 2018.
Interestingly, it seems the leaked details in question were said to revolve around a bunch of beauty tips Victoria had shared with the Duchess ahead of her move to London.
The book also delves into how the Palace reportedly stepped in to control Meghan’s life as soon as she started dating Harry, even needing to approve all the details in the scripts for Suits, in which Meghan had a role.
The explosive royal biography sure does lean into the narrative that Meghan has a ruthless, cold side, even sharing a moment between her and a friend ahead of Meghan making it official with Harry:
Bower says [that Meghan’s pal Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne] warned her that royal duties would take over – and she wouldn’t be able to make any more films.
But Meghan reportedly wasn’t impressed – with Bower writing: ”Gina, save it,’ Meghan snapped. Nelthorpe-Cowne was taken aback by the steel in Meghan’s voice.
‘Holding up her hand, Meghan continued: ‘Stop. Be quiet. I don’t want to hear any negativity. This is a happy time for us.’ Stopped in her tracks, Nelthorpe-Cowne looked at the hard fury in Meghan’s eyes.’
The book also speaks about William’s fear that Meghan was becoming a “divisive agent”, revealing how Harry changed his number but neglected to let his people know:
“To please her, Harry had split from his old friends. He had even changed his telephone number without telling his family.”
Hopefully, Meghan and Harry have broken that habit of “trawling social media, searching for snide comments on the internet”.
I’m sure they have better things to do with their time.
