Theuns du Toit, perhaps better known as the urinating Stellenbosch University student, has been expelled after a video showed him peeing on the desk and belongings of Agricultural Business Management student, Babalo Ndwayana.
The university announced the decision yesterday evening, having carried out a disciplinary hearing which started last month.
That hearing started off on the wrong foot when Ndwayana walked out of proceedings, saying he couldn’t be certain the panel the university had appointed would be objective.
His family seems satisfied with the decision announced last night, however. His father, Mkuseli Kaduka, said the expulsion was “just the beginning” and they intended to take the matter further with police.
News24 below:
Du Toit [below] was found guilty of contravening several clauses of the university’s disciplinary code for students, according to spokesperson Martin Viljoen.
A statement said the university operated on a set of basic values which every student is expected to respect and promote, and which informs the application of this disciplinary code.
“The values are excellence, accountability, mutual respect, and compassion”.
The Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC), which “is an independent and objective, but closed, committee” according to Viljoen, concluded that there was no alternative but to expel Du Toit with immediate effect.
Stellenbosch University’s deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, said due process had thoroughly been adhered to. Here’s EWN:
“The university takes a zero-tolerance approach to racism, discrimination, prejudice and conduct – which assails the dignity of another person. University management took note of the sanction imposed and will be studying the details of the CDC’s finding.”
It’s unlikely that the image of du Toit’s brother taken last December, smiling while holding the old South African flag, would have played a role in the CDC hearing. In the court of public opinion, however, it was certainly damaging.
Du Toit has been given five days to appeal his expulsion.
