Today’s watches do way more than simply tell the time.
They count calories, send messages, make calls, play music, give traffic alerts, and most miraculously, they are able to save lives.
Multiple people have come forward over the years with stories about how their Apple Watch saved their life.
A woman from Maine is the most recent rescue, with the watch’s technology detecting the abnormal erratic beating of her heart.
Not even in her wildest dreams did Kim Durkee imagine that her watch featuring Minnie Mouse would help diagnose a deadly tumour.
Kim didn’t immediately believe her Apple Watch when in late May it woke her up with a warning that her heart was in atrial fibrillation, CBS News reported:
“The third night the numbers went a little too high for comfort,” Kim [below] said.
“Then I said you know what, go to the emergency room if they tell you it’s nothing to worry about then toss the watch.”
The reason for the warning was that she had a myxoma, a rare, fast-growing tumour that was choking off her heart’s blood supply and would have eventually caused a stroke.
Scarily, her only symptoms were the A-fib.
After quickly making arrangements for the life-saving surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, doctors removed the four-centimetre tumour that would have ended her life were it not for her Apple Watch.
“It truly saved my life,” Kim said, adding, “I consider myself to be very lucky, to be here and talking to you.”
You can never fully plan for circumstances like those above. That being said, the latest Apple Watch Series 7 has a huge range of health insights available:
In another part of the world, on June 18, a man went kayaking on Sydney’s north shore with another person when they became separated by strong currents and winds.
The man who was swept out only had his Apple Watch, which he used to make an emergency service call that saved his life, The Mirror reported:
The orange kayak was spotted nearly 4km offshore by the rescue helicopter, with the kayaker struggling to stay upright at this point due to his fatigue.
Helicopter rescuer Nick Pavlakis told 9 News, according to the Daily Mail : “He was falling out of his kayak and had taken on quite a bit of water. “He was lucky he had connection on his device to make that desperate call for help.”
That he was.
