“From the sick and twisted minds of Abel and Sam Levinson,” as the first teaser footage begins, comes HBO’s latest wild ride starring Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp.

Abel is, of course, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, and Levinson is the guy behind Euphoria, that other visceral, debauchery-filled series featuring drugs and hot teens.

Yep, all in all, we’re in for a lot of crazy.

Starring in and co-creating the upcoming limited series, The Weeknd dropped the teaser during his After Hours Til Dawn concert on July 16.

There are very few details released about The Idol, per Variety, with no premiere date set and the teaser concluding with a simple “coming soon”.

There is a one-liner about the plot, though: “A self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult enters a complicated relationship with a rising pop idol.”

The Weeknd plays the guru, while Depp is the star of the show as the pop idol surrounded by dangerous and alluring cult happenings.

‘The sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood’ is quite a bold claim for a brand new series to start throwing around, but given Levinson’s previous form, it’s probably justified.

And the trailer for The Idol certainly sets up the stall for the new HBO show: hot young things writhing around by a pool, in parties, in strip clubs; spraying Champagne and racking up lines; literal pants being dropped and steamy sex scenes against the illuminating backdrop of La La Land by night.

The series also gives us a look at how far Spud – Johannesburg-born YouTuber, singer, and actor Troye Sivan – has come. He also features in the series.

Otherwise, you may have spotted Jennie Kim from the K-pop sensation Blackpink, Hari Nef (Transparent), and former Disney star Debby Ryan in there somewhere.

Is the music industry ready to be pried open like this, with The Idol zoning in on the toxic and exploitative nature of the whole culture of celebrity and fame?

Probably not, but also, bring it on.
