Police Minister Bheki Cele has spent the past week with his tail between his legs, reflecting on how poorly he has handled the duties assigned to his position.
Ha, we joke.
After his infamous altercation with Ian Cameron from lobby group Action Society, which saw him shouting ‘shut up’ at the top of his lungs and accusing Cameron of racism, the minister has carried on with his meaningless public appearances.
At least four taverns have been targeted in mass shootings since last Friday, the most recent of which saw the Monaco Tavern in Mamelodi attacked in the early hours of Monday morning. Cele has once again spoken about increased police presence.
It’s the same kak he spouts every time he appears in front of grieving community members and we all know it rings hollow.
As does Zapiro, who penned this cartoon for The Daily Maverick:
Yup, he doesn’t miss.
Despite wearing a hat which screams wannabe gangster, Cele took time out this week to berate people with tattoos as having ‘gangster tendencies’.
Speaking to a crowd in Orlando East (cue the obligatory increased police presence spiel), the minister said work is underway to bolster police recruits.
Below via News24:
[He] said they would recruit and select suitable candidates to serve as police officers, adding all applicants would be subjected to fitness, psychometric and integrity testing, as well as medical evaluations during the recruitment, selection and enlistment process.
“When you have a tattoo, we don’t hire you because you have a tendency of being a gangster.”
Sure thing, Bheki.
Hey, remember that time you were SAPS National Commissioner until misconduct allegations led to your suspension and then removal in June 2012?
Sounds pretty gangster to me, tats or no tats.
