Right off the bat, the most notable Emmy announcement is the lack of one.
Usually, the Television Academy acknowledges which network or platform is leading the list, which means the likes of HBO and Netflix have been left sweating to find out who came out on top this year.
The two streamers have been neck and neck for yonks, with HBO usually dominating, except for last year when Netflix earned 44 total awards, ahead of HBO/HBO Max’s 19.
When two platforms merge, the awards are arguably skewed, creating a controversial outcome. For example, HBO (with 94 nominations) and HBO Max (with 36 nominations) were jointly crowned in 2021 with 130 nominations, which Netflix said was rubbish, arguing that it could have won with its 129 nominations if the outlets were split.
That’s why this year, the Academy has decided to stay away from network tallies altogether, according to Variety, rather focusing on the actual shows that were nominated instead.
If everyone does the maths themselves, though, HBO/HBO Max is on top again this year with 140 nominations (108 for HBO, 32 for HBO Max), followed by Netflix with 105.
You can check out the full list of nominations over at Variety, in all the 100+ categories.
Rather, we will focus on some of the more notable nominations and some of the saddest snubs.
Netflix’s Squid Game, HBO’s Succession, NBC’s Saturday Night Live. and Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso were some of the standout TV shows breaking records and maintaining the limelight this year, per Hollywood Reporter:
Squid Game made history by becoming the first-ever non-English language show and series solely produced outside of a Western country to receive a major-category nomination, receiving a solid 14 nods:
Succession got 14 nods in the acting categories, which broke the record for the most Emmy acting nominations for a drama series in a single year:
Meanwhile, SNL did well to maintain its record as the most Emmy-nominated series in history. After earning nine Emmy nominations this year, the comedy sketch series now has a total of 315 Emmy nominations since its 1975 premiere:
Ted Lasso received 20 nods last year – the most nominations in a single year for a freshman comedy – and has continued that streak this year as the show earned 20 nominations again:
Apart from those four shows, there were a few other history-making nods.
Former US President Barack Obama received his first nod for best narrator in Netflix’s Our Great National Parks, which has put him in good stead to gain EGOT status – the achievement of having won all four of the major American entertainment awards (an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony):
We also have the creator and star Quinta Brunson from Abbott Elementary, who not only became a first-time nominee but is now the youngest Black woman nominated in the outstanding lead actress in a comedy acting category:
Zendaya has now become the youngest acting nominee for the second year in a row for her role in Euphoria.
South Africa representation is in there, too, with Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show earning the most nods since he started his hosting tenure in 2015. The show also earned the most nods of any late-night franchise this year with seven nominations:
As for those joining the first nominations club besides Obama:
Among the stars scoring their first nods are the late Chadwick Boseman for Marvel’s WHAT IF…?, musician Lizzo (for Watch Out for the Big Grrrls), comedians Bill Burr and Jerrod Carmichael (nominated for two separate honors including his HBO comedy special Rothaniel), and actors Jennifer Coolidge for The White Lotus, Andrew Garfield for Under the Banner of Heaven, Oscar Isaac for Scenes From A Marriage, Sheryl Lee Ralph for Abbott Elementary, Amanda Seyfried for The Dropout and Colman Domingo for Euphoria.
So relieved Coolidge’s name has popped up:
But saddened that just Isaac is being acknowledged for Scenes From A Marriage and not his play-wife Jessica Chastain:
I guess that brings us to some of the biggest snubs, which according to TV Line include:
The 74th Emmy Awards will be broadcast on September 12.
