Netflix’s upcoming movie might have a metaphor about gentrification and capitalism in it somewhere.
Then again, it could just be a classic action-packed comedy with the usual trope of good fighting a battle against evil.
Either way, Day Shift sees Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, and Dave Franco “cutting necks and cashing check”, AKA taking down all of Los Angeles’ vampires who are threatening to take control of the area.
Foxx stars as Bud Jablonski, a father and blue-collar worker trying to navigate the rising cost of living in LA by taking on a job as a vampire exterminator.
Also in the demon-hunting union is Dogg, who plays Bud’s friend Big John Elliott, and Franco, whose role is the union rep for vampire hunters.
Megan Good and Zion Boadnax star as Bud’s wife and daughter, who thinks he is a pool cleaner.
Then there’s Karla Souza as the valley’s most powerful bloodsucking real estate agent forcing the community to gentrify and become the exclusive home to vampires. Besides the literal blood-sucking part, that doesn’t sound so far-fetched.
Check out the first look at Day Shift in the trailer:
IndieWire reported that the story is close to J.J. Perry’s heart, who will be making his directorial debut alongside the producer Chad Stahelski, who directed John Wick :
“[Bud’s] an ex-Army guy. I was an infantryman. He came to L.A. and he’s a guy that gets in over his head, a lot like I do, but he has to be able to get himself out of trouble,” Perry explained.
“I have a nine-year-old daughter. He has a daughter. He’s trying hard to keep his family together. And, you know, times are tough. I live in Koreatown, and you have to earn money. Earning enough is such a huge part of living in L.A. because it’s expensive to live here. And there’s another secret world of vampires that is hiding right under our noses that nobody knows about.”
What a premise.
You can watch the full flick on Netflix when it premieres on August 12.
