Sometimes you just want to pop onto WhatsApp and not have everyone suddenly bother you because they’ve noticed you’re online.
Or, perhaps, you don’t want a specific someone to know that you’re on the messaging app because, say, you’ve said that you’ll be out of touch, but really you just don’t want to speak to that someone.
We all have our reasons for wanting to be a little more stealthy.
WhatsApp seems to have considered this and you’ll soon be able to use the app without anyone even knowing about it.
The platform’s developers are working on a new feature that will enable users to hide their online status, which means the little in-app indicator that you’re online may be switched off and hidden from all contacts.
Hell yes, stealth mode: activated.
According to the insider website WABetaInfo, via BusinessTech, this is just one of a few possible changes coming to the Meta messaging app:
Currently, the app allows users to specify who can see when they were last active on the app. A future update will enable users to set the online notification to be the same as the last seen setting.
Other possible future features include extending the time limit for deleting messages on Android devices from one hour to 60 hours, as well as implementing the ability to edit messages sent on WhatsApp – although the details around the scope and flexibility (time limits?) of these changes are not yet known.
One might also soon be able to exit groups quietly, without notifying other participants. Good to know.
Otherwise, there’ll be new tools for tracking ads on WhatsApp Premium for businesses, better alignment of WhatsApp Desktop with mobile features, and better integration between platforms, like allowing users to move chats and history from Android to iOS.
All better late than never.
