I never thought I would say this, but the Minions are tickling me pink (yellow?).
Okay, well, it’s more the “Gru in suits” meme trend that is taking over at the moment.
Let me explain: audience members are showing up to watch Minions: The Rise of Gru, the latest film in the Despicable Me/Minions film series, in actual suits – and this has sparked a major meme.
Or perhaps it is the other way around. It is hard to tell with the internet of things.
The “babbling Twinkie-shaped underlings” as Mashable phrased it, “transcend language and culture, to unite us as one Gru-tiful family”, which this new Minions movie seems to be doing to the tune of $129 million.
That’s how much the film is set to make in the US, breaking the Fourth of July weekend box office record.
Here’s the trailer before the memes:
Fewer thanks go to the Minions marketing team and more kudos go to the Gen Zs who can’t get enough of memes and yellow things:
Fans have borrowed the “Tickets to X, please” meme that gained popularity after the release of The Joker and added a minion spin. Movie-goers and their memes have donned suits for reasons including: as a tongue-in-cheek sign of respect for the franchise, to joke that being a fan of a kid’s film is mature and attractive, and to revel in the irony of wearing a straight-up suit to a children’s movie.

Which, in real life, translates as such:
i am LIVING for all the teenagers/young adults on tiktok going to see minions: rise of gru in suits, formal attire, or dressed like minions 😭 it’s so funny for no reason pic.twitter.com/vCsue0XP81

At this stage, there’s no point trying to figure out if Minions is for adults or children because it is clearly something that defies categorisation:

The Jack Antonoff-made soundtrack might have also played a hand in this diverse audience, too, featuring covers of hits from Diana Ross, Brockhampton, Kali Uchis, Phoebe Bridgers, Jackson Wang, Thundercat, and more:

Phoebe has proven to be an interesting addition:

At the end of the day:
love em or hate em there’s one thing u can’t deny about em and it’s that the minions get people talking

Yes, it is idiotic, but it is also hilarious.
