Apple hasn’t become the world’s first $1 trillion, $2 trillion, and $3 trillion company by resting on its laurels.
Not bad for a company that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, two college dropouts, started in Jobs’ family garage.
Spare a thought for the third co-founder, Ronald Wayne, who sold his share of the company 12 days later.
Apple continues to release new products at a rate of knots. Hot off the heels of last year’s MacBook Pro, we have the latest MacBook Pro 2022, featuring the M2 processor.
The new model is under the microscope at present so we’ve rounded up a few reviews from leading tech sites to see what the buzz is, starting with iMore:
This souped-up 13-inch revision of the MacBook Pro line is full of all sorts of new wizardry internally thanks to its second-generation M2 Apple silicon system on a chip. But externally, the new MacBook Pro retains a very familiar design…
The display on the 13-inch MacBook Pro for 2022 is gorgeous [and] Apple’s M2 chip is a beast, wiping the floor even with the last-generation M1 chip…
Apple’s speed of innovation here is out of the traps at a remarkable pace.
For a point of comparison, the M2 13-inch MacBook Pro boasts an 18% faster CPU than the equivalent-sized M1 MacBook Pro and a 35% performance increase in terms of GPU.
Four-and-a-half stars out of five is pretty darn impressive.
The Verge has scored it an eight out of 10, and Gizmodo a solid four stars. The latter stresses its “Blistering performance, Class-leading battery life, Great keyboard/trackpad, Outstanding build quality, Slim design, [and] Bright display”.
Most reviews stress that it’s essentially the same design as previous models but the processing power is in a class of its own, as is the battery life.
There are also those who think it’s worth waiting until the new, redesigned MacBook Air M2 is released. Tom’s Guide lists three reasons you might want to pull the trigger on the MacBook Pro:
Active cooling is the biggest advantage the new MacBook Pro has over the redesigned MacBook Air. Because it doesn’t have a fanless design, the Pro should achieve higher levels of performance.
While both of Apple’s newest laptops pack the M2 chip, the MacBook Pro has a 10-core GPU as standard. If you want that for the Air, you’ll need to shell out an extra $300.
The MacBook Pro 2022 has a 58.2 watt-hour battery whereas the MacBook Air has a 52.6 watt-hour battery. Apple says the Pro is rated to last for 20 hours of video playback and 17 hours of wireless web surfing.
Apple talks up the display and keyboard:
So, what’s the damage?
We often have to wait in South Africa while US prices are released well in advance. This time, Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer, has all the details.
The 13-inch model, featuring the M2 processor, is available for preorder from R24 999.
For a machine that is guaranteed to last years, operating at breakneck speed, that should be money well spent.
