They’re releasing a new Barbie film.

I know, right? It feels like we’re beyond all that hot pink, tons of glitter, fake tans, and plastic lands.

But before you get blinded by the fake fantastic, listen to who is involved in this movie.

If Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie looking extra trim, beautiful, blonde, and tanned – more so than anyone from the shores of Geordie or Jersey, just FYI – doesn’t make you want to look twice, then consider that Greta Gerwig is directing the film.

That means it probably won’t be as vapid as one might think…

If her other films like Lady Bird and Mistress America are anything to go by, then we can expect at least some of her signature deadpan humour to be injected into Barbie.

To take it up a notch, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Hari Nef, and Kate McKinnon are also starring in this toy story.

Look, I would never go so far as to say that life in plastic really is fantastic, but this casting is truly tempting.

I can’t tell if I am sweating because of all that hot pink or because Margot and Ryan are absolutely killing it in the plastic world.

While we don’t have all the details yet, we know that the film will focus on the eponymous doll originally created by Mattel. The current IMDB synopsis for the film reads: “A doll living in Barbieland is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world.”

While there, it’s believed that Margot’s Barbie will encounter other versions of herself and boyfriend Ken (more on that below) and learn the painful lesson that perfection can only truly be found within.

Also, Sex Education‘s Emma Mackey is set to appear alongside her Netflix co-star Ncuti Gatwa in a yet-to-be-revealed role.

Emma and Margot do have a strikingly similar look, so Emma might be playing another Barbie.

Margot acknowledged how having Greta on board is the best bet to elevate the Barbie image above boring cliches and stereotypes, per Vogue:

In her cover interview for British Vogue’s August 2021 issue, Robbie admitted that creating a live-action Barbie film “comes with a lot of baggage” as well as “a lot of nostalgic connections”. “But with that come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it.

People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’” It’s no secret that the franchise’s lack of diversity has historically proved controversial, too – and is something that Gerwig will need to tackle head-on in the film.

No trailer has been revealed yet, and Warner Bros Pictures is saying that Barbie will be released on July 21 next year.

Fine, we’ll wait.
