Yet another new development is set to transpire in the seemingly interminable Depp v. Heard saga, but this time Heard is vying for the last word.
NBC News released a preview of Amber Heard’s sit-down interview with journalist Savannah Guthrie, which will air in full on June 17.
The interview will mark Heard’s first onscreen interview since a jury found in favour of ex-husband Johnny Depp’s suit against her.
According to Sky News, a spokesperson for the actress explained that she opted to speak out on this platform, after finding that in the aftermath of the trial Depp’s team had dominated (or “blanketed”) the media.
She also wishes to “express her thoughts and feelings, much of which she was not allowed to do on the witness stand.”

Heard has faced a barrage of online censure since the trial commenced – read more about it here, on the Ringer – and appears to address the effects of this phenomenon in the interview footage:
An Independent article relays how Heard does not blame the jury for the verdict and sympathises with the public’s affinity for Depp, even going so far as to say: “I actually understand. He’s a beloved character and people feel they know him. He’s a fantastic actor.”
Nevertheless, Heard clearly believes that the way she has been construed in recent months has been grossly unfair, pinpointing the “hate and vitriol” that has been volleyed against her on social media, telling Guthrie:
“I don’t care what one thinks about me or what judgements you want to make about what happened in the privacy of my own home and my marriage behind closed doors. I don’t presume the average person should know those things, and so I don’t take it personally.”
“But even somebody who is sure I am deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I’m lying, you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation. You cannot tell me that you think that this has been fair.”
Guthrie seems to tackle Heard’s alleged lying head-on in the preview, pushing the disgraced Aquaman actress as to why she thinks responsible jurors wouldn’t have taken all the testimony and evidence available to them into account.
Within the confines of the preview, at least, Heard insists that there was no way for the jury to maintain impartiality after Depp’s legal team spent the duration of the trial maligning her as “a non-credible person” – in other words, a liar.
Whether Heard’s latest foray into the public eye does anything to rehabilitate her reputation remains to be seen.
But it’s clear that – Depp’s recent victory notwithstanding – she won’t be going down without a fight.
