Apparently, Johnny Depp is keen not to lose any momentum after his victory in court on June 2, as the actor is once again taking centre stage.
This time he’s doing so with the release of a doleful new track.
According to an article in the Guardian, the single – entitled ‘This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr’ – is a preview of Depp’s upcoming album with Jeff Beck, the Englishman best known for being the Yardbirds’ guitarist in the 1960s.
Lend your ears:
Named in honour of 1940s screen icon-cum-engineer-cum inventor Hedy Lamarr, Depp’s song appears to be a pitiful lamentation of the misanthropy that he associates with fame.
Already, the song’s refrain “I don’t believe, I can’t believe, I won’t believe humans anymore,” has been taken up as an anthem for Depp supporter’s in the aftermath of the actor’s successful defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Exhibiting unfortunate – if wholly characteristic – egocentricity, Depp refers to Lamarr in the song as being “erased by the same world that made her a star,” a parallel he is presumably drawing between himself and the late actress.
However, sensitive auditors are apt to notice that the kind of erasure Depp is describing applies more to his ex-wife Heard’s current situation than it does to his own.
According to the Guardian, Depp and Beck were performing on tour in the United Kingdom to promote the release of their record, 18, when Depp was informed that the jury had found in his favour.
In spite of the fact that Heard has made no secret of the fact that she plans to appeal the verdict, Depp’s recent (very public) career moves make it clear that either the allegedly abusive actor feels like he can move forward in… good conscience now that his name has been cleared(ish).
Alternatively, it may be that Depp knows the battle is far from over and is making hay while the going is still good.
After all, in the words of Depp’s new single, “… of all dispossessed, it’s so hard to digest / you’ve no right to sit down if you’re nobody’s guest.”
