It used to be on your morning and afternoon commute to and from work/school that the viral pop songs of the time would worm into your ears from the radio and stay for the rest of the day.
Nowadays, earworms wiggle into your head from all angles thanks to the ubiquitous video-sharing app, TikTok.
And they hardly ever leave.
“My money don’t jiggle, jiggle, it folds…” – sorry um, where were we… – “I like to see you wiggle, wiggle, for sure …” – no, but really, there is hardly a platform that has a greater influence on music these days than TikTok.
As Mashable all but suggests, for a disproportionate number of us, our musical (and perhaps daily) experiences are defined by the songs we can’t escape on our For You Pages.
Let’s delve into some of the top TikTok songs that have taunted us this year, starting off with that song I couldn’t help singing by the mere mention of TikTok:
‘Jiggle Jiggle’ by Duke & Jones and Louis Theroux
You have to know that this song wasn’t really a thing until TikTok made it a thing.
This “rap” snippet that the British American journalist wrote for an episode of Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends in 2000 was levelled and Autotuned with backing music added to become the viral sensation that it is today.
This next one is EVERY. WHERE.
‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)’ by Kate Bush
Who knew all Stranger Things needed to get back into mainstream public consciousness would be a key Kate Bush needle drop during a poignant scene in the Upside Down? And now Bush is running back up those charts and all over our FYPs — as she should be! — thanks to a TikTok trend that finds users recounting their “Vecna songs,” or the tracks that would save them from the show’s current Big Bad.
‘About Damn Time’ by Lizzo
The track took off on TikTok thanks to its infectious beat and a fun dance created by @jaedengomezz and has since been used in an amazing three million (and counting) videos since its release in April.
‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings’ by Caroline Polachek
Back in 2019, Polachek’s choreography for this song took to the platform as a rather uncharacteristically easy TikTok dance, actually.
‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ from Encanto
This Encanto song rose to the top of America’s Billboard Hot 100 chart in February, becoming the new go-to song for children and parents (sorry, Frozen) and inspiring its own trend in something like a million TikToks.
For the other hot tunes, Mashable has more.
Elyse Meyers sums the earworm-ness of TikTok up pretty well:

Yeah, pretty much…
Have fun trying to work them out of your head now; “It makes me want to dribble, dribble, you know …”
