South Africa is also plagued by mass shootings.
There has been yet another murderous spree that has seized the community of Khayelitsha in Cape Town.
On Tuesday at around 7PM in Site B, gunmen entered a local supermarket in Sulani Drive and killed four people on the spot.
Three of those people died on the scene, while the fourth was rushed to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.
Western Cape Organised Crime Unit detectives have launched an investigation into the shooting at the Madiba supermarket, while the Khayelitsha police have opened murder dockets, IOL reported.
Per News24, police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa mentioned that the unidentified gunmen fired several shots, for reasons still unknown.
Potelwa said that no arrests have been made for this latest incident.
There has been a spate of deadly shootings in the townships recently- murders that experts believe are linked to a protection racket where gangs are allegedly extorting local spaza shop owners.
The gangs involved have been battling out this rivalry, which has only been escalating since last year.
Since 2o2o, Khayelitsha has been victim to nine reported mass shootings, including one on May 15 last year in which a devastating 13 people were shot dead in one day, with one victim found next to some cash.
Our national crime statistics reveal even more nauseating numbers, with a reported 6 083 people murdered in the first three months of this year (January to March).
That’s just shy of 2 028 people a month, or 68 people a day, or 2,83 an hour.
Crunch the numbers even further, and that’s one murder every 21 minutes.
