Dubbed the “School of Kings”, Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland has an impressive 5 000-strong alumni consisting of various dynastic families, monarchs, and billionaires.
That includes the likes of the Hohenzollern family, the Cavendish family, the Rothschilds, Koskulls, and Rockefellers, alongside royal alumni like the Shah of Iran, Prince Rainier, the Duke of Kent, King Fouad II of Egypt, King Juan Carlos of Spain, King Albert II of Belgium, and the Aga Khan.
Never mind how Juan Carlos turned out…
The oldest and most revered Swiss boarding school has everything that its sparkling student body could ever desire, never mind need.
It better have it all if it’s going to cost a whopping $132 000 a year in tuition fees (just over R2 million).
Our most expensive private school, Hilton College, which sets boarders back just north of R330 000 a year in 2021, costs a pittance in comparison.
Le Rosey takes in nearly 400 students from across 65 nations and equally divides them between boys and girls aged seven to 18 into four stages: juniors, cadets, Jeunes seniors, and seniors.
It is less a school and more a bilingual temple of education which offers luxury sports (skiing and yachting) alongside a curriculum that gets 30% of its students into universities ranked in the top 25 globally.
The school is split into two manorial campuses, per Luxury Launches, with the Main Campus at the 14th-century Château du Rosey in the town of Rolle, and the school’s Winter Campus in the beautiful village of chalets in the charming ski resort of Gstaad.
The Main Campus comprises 28 hectares of landscaped grounds, not so far from the school’s sailing centre, the ‘Fleur d’Eau,’ which is situated along Lake Geneva’s 100-metre shoreline.
That is where you will find the institutes’ 10 dinghies, three motorboats, and 38-foot (11,6-metre) yacht.
Besides the exorbitant fees needed to pay for the posse of 150 teachers and support staff, the tuition also provides the students with the most sumptuous amenities:
Le Rosey possesses 179 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, 48 apartments for Le Rosey teachers, a theatre, three dining rooms, two cafeterias, an auditorium, two gymnasiums, and an ecumenical chapel.
As far as the academic wing is concerned, there are no less than 53 classrooms, eight science laboratories, 14 specially-equipped rooms, two infirmaries, and a library with an impressive 30,000 titles.
Let’s not forget the luxurious sports curriculum. Facilities include 10 clay tennis courts, a massive indoor pool and wellness centre, an outdoor pool, three football pitches, a synthetic rugby pitch, a wood chip running track, and a shooting and archery range.
Also, an open-air theatre, a computer-regulated greenhouse, a private equestrian centre that houses 30 horses, an indoor riding school, a dressage area, and a clubhouse.
Is there anything else? Yes, the jewel in the crown:
The highlight of the campus is the Paul and Henri Carnal Hall, a $52 million building designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi and named for the school’s founder and his son. The structure houses a black-box theater, educational spaces, a learning center, and a restaurant.
The large concert hall and performance space boasts nearly 1000 seats, where students come together for conferences, plays, musicals, concerts and anything else that feeds the cultural appetite of Rosey students.
This video, shot in 2020, gives us a further look inside. I had to stop at the mention of the school’s yacht to steady my nausea, so good job if you make it through.
