In case you hadn’t heard, Seth is a pilot.
I can’t speak to whether or not he wept while watching Top Gun: Maverick (or will, when the time comes), but he’s clearly excited by the prospect of the long-awaited sequel.
That’s why we are here talking about Glen Powell, who plays Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin in the film, giving you permission to let those feelings out.
Thanks, Glen.
It started with a tweet:
“Top Gun: Maverick” should be a safe place for man-tears. https://t.co/1h2mDEZZFb
— Glen Powell (@glenpowell) May 28, 2022
How do man tears differ from regular tears? Are they less or more salty? What about viscosity?
According to one study, tears shed by women “contain chemical signals that decrease sexual arousal and testosterone levels in men”.
I fear we have gone off on a tangent.
In response to Powell’s tweet, moviegoers shared their teary-eyed experiences en masse:
Oh by the end I was literally bawling my eyes out! There were a lot of man-tears all through out, lots of laughs and goosebumps too! That’s a helluva good movie y’all did! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I think I cried about 5 times, it was emotional!

i cried twice, almost 2 more times at the end

Let it go, Vic. Four times is nothing to be ashamed of.
The Maverick and Iceman scenes, featuring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, are particularly likely to induce welling up:
If you DIDN’T get a touch of the feels w/ Mav and Iceman, you’re probably an undercover android.

Glen says he’s also been creeping in cinemas and watching how people react:
Been popping into theaters to just watch audiences reactions to this film. Men, women, old, young. It’s all fist pumps, hugs, and high fives on the walk out. This is why we love the movies. https://t.co/gtcbpdzBhv

Cool.
While he hasn’t come out and said it, I’ll assume you also have Cruise’s permission to sob during the film given his reaction at the movie premiere in Cannes.
Below from The Hollywood Reporter:
…even by the festival’s own standards, Cruise received the sort of rapturous reception that could only befit one of Hollywood’s most successful and globally renowned stars.
And after the final frame hit the screen close to 10 p.m., the audience responded with a six-minute standing ovation that brought Cruise to tears, closing out an epic day.
I reckon Cruise may also have welled up when seeing the numbers from this weekend’s massive box office opening. Between Friday’s opening and yesterday, the film took in $124 million in the US alone, which makes it the strongest debut of his career by far.
Worldwide, that total is $248 million.
Some industry insiders say Cruise could be receiving as much as 20% first-dollar gross, which is unprecedented in modern Hollywood. Using that metric, he would have raked in $49,6 million from the first weekend alone.
Tears of joy all around.
