The Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard trial has taught us many things. For example, the crazy amount of money Depp made from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
I’ll also never think of the phrase “shit the bed” in the same way again.
But most of all, having been forced to pay close attention to this trial, I think it’s taught us how people are incapable of recognising a mutually abusive relationship. On social media, people pick one side and demonise the other, when in reality it appears these were two people who treated each other terribly.
There are no winners, other than the lawyers who have cashed huge cheques. I am thankful that the legal teams for Depp and Heard will make their closing statements today before the jury heads off to consider their ruling.
This could take hours, a day, or days. But it will be over, and we can move on with our lives.
Why are we here again? Oh yes, former TMZ employee Morgan Tremaine and his quip. The basics via Hello Mag:
Tremaine, who was a former field assignment manager at the publication, took to the stand to claim he dispatched photographers to get pictures of Amber at court in LA in May 2016 after they were tipped off.
“The objective was to capture her leaving the courthouse and she was going to stop and turn to the camera and display the bruise,” he said.
One of Amber’s lawyers, Elaine Bredehoft, asked him if he was appearing only to score his “15 minutes of fame” and Tremaine hit back.
The exchange takes place inside the first minute of this video:
Depp and his legal team clearly enjoyed that riposte.
Not quite as much as when Heard mentioned Kate Moss, though.
Credit to Tremaine for this statement in the wake of his quip going viral:
My statement:
I genuinely hope no one is paying attention to this trial today, and are instead focused on stopping gun violence like that which killed 19 children and 2 teachers in Texas this week. Celebrity news does not matter.

It’s also ironic that it’s Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, who is the headline-grabber from this trial.
Fan accounts on social media, video tributes, gushing praise – she won’t be short of work when this thing wraps up.
Please, let them wrap up soon.
