If ever you’re feeling frustrated at being trapped indoors, I recommend swinging past the Latest Sightings YouTube channel.
There’s always somebody out there with a camera, showcasing the best of what nature has to offer.
This time around, it’s past and current MalaMala guides, Mike Kirkman and Pieter van Wyk, who have shared an incredible story with Latest Sightings.
MalaMala is a large privately owned reserve which neighbours Sabi Sands and shares a common border with Kruger National Park.
Alright, to tell us more about that hippo surprise here are Mike and Pieter:
“This female leopard was hunting for catfish one evening, as the water holes are drying up now – heading into the dry season. Whilst hunting at night, the hippo was out of the water – or in this case – mud, as hippos forage and graze at night.”
However, in the daytime, it was a different story. “Little did she know, a hippo was wallowing in the very same area.” The leopard was still carefully manoeuvering around, attempting to fish, when the next thing this massive hippo moved and announced its presence.
It’s similar to a house cat getting a massive skrik when the vacuum turns on, in a way:
A catfish hunt isn’t the sort of leopard kill you expect to see.
I’m sat at a desk, though, while it pisses with rain outside, so I’ll take what I can get.
