Once upon a time, a British couple decided to sponsor a Ukrainian refugee by giving her a place to stay.
Tony Garnett, a 29-year-old security guard and father of two, and his wife Lorna had welcomed Sofiia Karkadym into their home as her own became besieged by a Russian invasion.
The couple had been together for 10 years, but in a matter of 10 days, everything began to unravel.
(Some sources say Lorna was Tony’s long-term girlfriend and not wife, but others say they’re married and they share the same surname.)
Tony reckons meeting the 22-year-old IT specialist from the eastern Ukrainian city of Lviv was like love at first sight. Sofiia, likewise, says she fancied Tony the moment she saw him, per The New York Post:
“It’s been very quick but this is our love story. I know people will think badly of me but it happens. I could see how unhappy Tony was.”
Sofiia fled her home in Lviv, crossing the border into Poland before going to live with Lorna and Tony earlier this month.
She had first connected with the British couple on Facebook.
While Sofiia insists she is not a “homewrecker”, Lorna was apparently jealous and unhappy with the situation from the very beginning:
The relationship began falling apart from the moment Karkadym came to stay and Lorna began to get “very jealous,” Garnett said.
“The atmosphere was getting really bad and Sofiia told me she didn’t know whether she could continue to live with us under these circumstances.”
Per Metro, Lorna asked Sofiia to leave their Bradford home, to which Tony responded, “If she’s going, I’m going”.
Tony and Sofia moved into his parents’ home and immediately started apartment hunting and getting Sofiia her permanent visa:
“We’re sorry for the pain we’ve caused but I’ve discovered a connection with Sofiia like I’ve never had before,” Garnett told the tabloid. “We’re planning the rest of our life together.”
While Sofiia is worried that this situation has put other UK families off hosting a Ukrainian refugee, Lorna is apparently devastated.
I guess things are not so fair in Lviv and war.
The end.
