Clifton First Beach.
A day that will forever be immortalised.
This week, a full decade ago, a trawler ship ran aground at Clifton Beach under heavy weather with 90 tonnes of fuel onboard.
As you can well imagine, there were frantic efforts to pull the ship free to deeper waters, and for the next few days, salvors battled day and night to come up with a plan to get the ship off the sand. The pressure was mounting, and the window to safely secure the ship was getting smaller and smaller.
The 28 crew that were on the ship were also getting hungry and we decided to lend a hand. After a quick call to our friends over at Butler’s Pizza, a plan was hatched.
Nic Bothma was on hand to photograph the occasion as the three Butlers, Luke Westgarth-Taylor, Wesley Graham and Justin Commerford, waded out to the ship, and delivered deliciously tasty and hot pizzas to the crew members.
They were thrilled and delighted with the gesture. The moment was also immortalised in this video:
The great news about the Eihatsu Maru is that it was safely towed off the coastline, docked, and underwent repairs.
This iconic photo by Nic Bothma went on to be featured in a photography book of many thousands of moments called A Day In The World, where people from around the globe picked up their cameras on May 15 to record their lives.
It’s one of the most comprehensive photographic documentation of daily life ever made, has become a collector’s item, and Butler’s Pizza is understandably honoured to be in it.
A decade later, they continue to deliver pizza across Cape Town, as hot and delicious as ever. A copy of the book also stopped by the iconic spot to relive a famous day from yesteryear:

What a time to be alive.
To celebrate the 10-year milestone, Butler’s is offering a chance to win a copy of A Day In The World and two pizza parties.
In order to win, order from Butler’s between today and May 31, say “A day in the World” to your telebutler when placing your order, and you will be automatically entered into the competition.
Three winners will be chosen.
Even if you don’t win a prize, you’re smashing Cape Town’s number one pizza in your face. That’s quite the consolation.
