Kruger National Park remains a favourite bush getaway for tourists and locals alike.
No matter what time of year you go, chances are you’re going to spot plenty of other cars on the road.
Part of the reason one goes to the bush is to get away from the horrors of a traffic jam, which has the ability to send the heart rate through the roof at very short notice.
Throw in a few taxis and an SUV with a GP licence plate liberally using the hooter and you have a recipe for disaster.
As far as traffic jams go, this one from the Kruger last week is about as good as it gets. SA People with more:
The awesome sight was captured on video by SA safari guide, tourist guide and wildlife photographer Rodney Nombekana – from Nombekana Safaris and Wildlife Photography…
Rodney’s on a mission to “inspire people to fall in love with our natural world and eventually play a vital part in conservation” to save it for current and future generations.
A noble cause if ever there was one.
Rodney shared this footage on his Facebook page last week:
Some comments on Facebook pointed out that it’s sad to see these beautiful males surrounded by so many vehicles.
They have a point, to which Rodney responded:
Roads in the park only form a very small part. Kruger is a massive park and this very video was taken just outside the camp on the main road and lions were on the road and cars started to pile up.
While occasionally this may happen I can assure you that the are many places in the park where you hardly see humans and animals enjoy their freedom. Furthermore the park does have a quota system on the number of vehicles allowed in a day in the park.
Tourists generally aren’t going to venture to some of the more remote parks in southern Africa.
If they leave Kruger Park understanding why it’s vital to protect and preserve these wild places, and the animals have sufficient space to escape prying eyes when they want, then this is the sort of traffic jam we can get behind.
