A prison guard and a convict accused of murder, who share the same surname but are not related, were on the run together for more than a week after escaping prison in Alabama.
But the escape came to an end when the prison guard died and the prisoner was put in custody after a car chase ended in a crash in Indiana.
Vicky White and Casey White left the Lauderdale County Detention Facility, supposedly for a mental health evaluation in court, on April 29.
But no such court appointment was scheduled, and it turned out Vicky, a previously loyal employee at the detention centre, had helped Casey make an escape.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Singleton referred to the unlikely pair’s relationship as a “jailhouse romance”.
She had submitted her retirement papers and sold her home before going on the run with the convict accused of murder.
But the “very long, stressful, challenging week and a half” came to an end on Monday, according to Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear, per NBC News.
An intense police pursuit ended in a crash, which led to Vicky’s death.
The New York Post reported that she had succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound:
…the pair was tracked down to a hotel on a citizen tip law enforcement received late Sunday night, authorities told reporters Monday evening.
Evansville Sheriff Dave Wedding said the suspects fled in a black Cadillac when they were discovered, resulting in a chase. During the high-speed pursuit, US Marshal Services collided with the truck, causing the vehicle to crash.
“When this occurred, the female driver of the vehicle shot herself and the passenger was injured,” Wedding said at the press conference.
Shortly after the crash, Casey apparently surrendered to authorities and was immediately taken into custody.
Thank goodness, too. Before his sentencing for kidnapping, burglary, and attempted murder back in 2015, “he made threats against his ex-girlfriend and her sister, warning that if he ever got out, he would kill them and that he wanted police to kill him.”
