When he filed a $50 million defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp knew he was going to have to air the dirtiest of laundry in public.
In late 2018, Heard wrote an opinion piece that was published in The Washington Post where she described her experience as a “public figure representing domestic abuse”. While she didn’t name Depp specifically, it’s obvious that she was referring to him.
In response to Depp’s libel case, Heard has hit back with a $100 million counterclaim against Depp.
Tuesday saw the Pirates of the Caribbean star take to the stand for day one of his testimony, which was full of stories indicating an extremely unhealthy relationship.
Yesterday, he went into greater detail regarding a number of infamous incidents, reports CNN:
An argument between the former couple in 2015 ended with Depp seeking medical care for a severed finger after, he claims, Heard threw a bottle of vodka at him.
“She threw the large bottle and it made contact [with his hand] and shattered everywhere,” Depp testifed. “Then I looked down and realized that my tip of my finger had been severed.”
“I don’t know what I nervous breakdown feels like,” Depp added. “But that’s probably the closest I had ever been.”
Depp says he has lost “nothing less than everything” following Heard going public with allegations of abuse, adding that people now see him as a “drunken, cocaine-fueled menace who beat woman suddenly in my 50s”.
During his testimony, Depp recounted Heard mocking some of his tattoos, having changed his ‘Winona Forever’ tattoo (in honour of then-girlfriend Winona Ryder) to read ‘Wino Forever’.
He alleges she also insisted that he get a tattoo of her name, which he eventually did:
“And ironically it wasn’t long after that that everything started going sideways,” Depp said.
“I was doing everything I could to bring a smile to her face as opposed to a frown and then the onslaught of whatever problems she was experiencing,” he said. “I would try to wake her up with laughter, singing stupid songs in her ear. I generally just tried to keep bringing her mood up. Sometimes it worked, many times it didn’t. But I tried.”
Alright, so let’s turn our attention to that infamous allegation of faeces in Depp’s bed.
This from NewsAU:
After another blow-up with his then-wife Amber Heard on her 30th birthday, Johnny Depp said he fled their Los Angeles home.
He planned to return to pick up a few items while Heard was at the Coachella music festival in 2016 – but his security warned him against it and showed him a photograph of their marital bed.
“On my side of the bed was human faecal matter,” he told the court. “I laughed. It was so outside, it was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh.”
In the past, Depp has said it was likely Heard or one of her friends who defecated in the bed. The actress denies this, saying it was one of her teacup Yorkies (above):
“I lived with those dogs for many years,” Depp said. “That did not come from a dog. It just didn’t.”
Depp’s testimony also included descriptions of being hit with a “roundhouse punch” by Heard and having a cigarette put out on his face.
At multiple points during his testimony, Heard could be seen shaking her head in disagreement.
Cross-examination of the actor by Heard’s legal team began in the final 30 minutes of yesterday’s hearing and will continue today.
We are not yet done with week one of what is expected to be a six-week trial.
