Credit should be given where credit is due.
Boerboel Wear labels itself a “proudly South African brand carrying authentic & fun fashion from WYS JOU VLEIS to GOOI MIELIES, leisure & lifestyle. We simply love Khaki!”
That checks out.
Over the past three or so years, when the brand’s marketing first attracted viral attention, it’s really leaned into the ‘joke’ and embraced the two-tone.
The Facebook ‘About’ section of the Boerboel profile states that they have “a lot of fun (with you) on our… journey to make khaki king with you”.
Here’s Cape Town Etc:
The ‘Jans’ rallied together after Donovan Goliath (the Real Goboza host) shared a photo of the ‘Backstreet Boers’ in 2019. They were just a couple of models strutting the colours of the khaki kingdom back then, until Goliath’s Twitter post about them saw him ask his followers to ‘name the rap group’. This was the joke that sparked an idea.
They actually did become a group, and one set on creating music and visuals that tannies and boere-kit lovers will certainly adore, and the rest of Mzanzi can appreciate as proudly South African.
Yes, there’s now a music video celebrating the ‘two-tone lyf‘ and it’s a piece of marketing genius.
Take it away, JAN JAN JAN:
Good luck trying to explain this to a foreigner.
The music video was released on March 31 and was trending this morning:
It’s now at number 19. I’m not sure what that says about our musical taste as a nation but hey, fair play to Boerboel and the Jans.
That video still has a long, long way to go before it rivals ‘Wys jou Vleis’, which has in excess of seven million views:
