OneDayOnly is pretty much on par with Nando’s when it comes to their quick-witted adverts.
The South African online deals retailer smacked the ball out of the park with their April Fools’ Day gag.
As you may well know, the phenomenon of billionaire Russian oligarchs being sanctioned because of the war in Ukraine, with their yachts being seized all over the show, as a result, is pretty fascinating.
So it is thus terribly apt – on this prankful day, in this war-ravaged age – for OneDayOnly to be disguising a deal for an Oligarch’s Megayacht with a 90% discount as a way to donate to Ukrainian relief efforts.
It’s genius:
The deal, punting a 140-metre megayacht “jam-packed with the kind of luxuries only Autocrats can dream of” takes a dig at Russian President Vladimir Putin, his wealthy cronies, as well as South Africa’s “old Comrades” (our government, to be sure) who have voiced rather questionable takes on the Ukraine invasion:
You could even sail it from The Crimea to South Africa where you’d be sure to get a warm welcome from your old Comrades. You could even host them for a ‘not an invasion or a war at all’ party (BOYB).
But instead of purchasing the vessel at a “Steal (and Aluminum)” you will be making a donation to a good cause, supporting the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine via Gift of The Givers.
The dropdown menu, which usually provides colour and size options for whatever is on sale, is instead loaded with different amounts to donate, ranging from R50 to R600.
For added giggles, OneDayOnly also added the non-option “April Fools! (10999948) (Sold Out)” as the top option.
Per Business Insider, the Gift of the Givers Foundation will use the money to buy essential items such as medical supplies.
Check out the deal for yourself here.
I’ll be here waiting for this whole year so far to be called out as an April Fools’ Day joke.
