The Worst Person In The World is getting rave reviews.
This Norwegian/Swedish romance tells the poignant story of a woman coming to terms with all the possibilities of this life.
She is almost 30 and she can’t decide what makes her feel the most alive, which to her, makes it feel like she is the worst person to exist.
Of course, that’s not true, as Joachim Trier’s phenomenal comedy about just trying to be a human being eventually makes clear.
Here’s more via the official synopsis:
The film revolves around Julie (Renate Reinsve), a vibrant and impulsive young woman who, on the verge of turning thirty, is faced with a series of drastic choices that force her to continually reinvent and pursue new perspectives on her life.
Over the course of several years, Julie navigates multiple love affairs, existential uncertainty and career dissatisfaction as she slowly starts deciding what she wants to do, who she wants to be with, and ultimately who she wants to become.
Empire seems to be positively smitten with this foreign film, writing that “as a playful love-letter to uncertainty, it’s far more accessible and watchable than it has any right to be”.
It adds, alongside the five-star rating, that:
[It’s] a truthful, tender masterpiece about how coming of age has no age-limit — love, for others and for ourselves, is what makes every risk and loss worthwhile. Rarely has a story like this been told as beautifully.
This glowing review is from alone, with the trailer showing similar ratings from The Telegraph, The Guardian, We Love Film, and Radio Times:
The review goes on to froth over the lead, Renate Reinsve, winner of the Best Actress award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, who gave a “tour-de-force performance, bolstered by a script so naturalistic, wise and organic that it can often feel like someone’s been listening in on those intimate conversations”.
The Worst Person in the World was released late last year.
