We have already covered the basics regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s alleged mistress, with whom he supposedly has four children.
It’s believed she is holed up in a Swiss chalet while he wages war on Ukraine.
She’s gone from being dubbed “Russia’s most flexible woman” (she’s a twice Olympic medal-winning gymnast) and the “most eligible woman in Moscow” to being called “Russia’s Eva Braun”.
That’s the wife of Adolf Hitler they’re referring to in that last one.
While the Kremlin has denied all reports of Putin and Alina Kabaeva ever being a couple, never mind married, people are looking right through those cover-up antics.
The Telegraph reported that a Change.org petition has been signed by almost 64 000 people telling the Swiss government that “It’s time you reunite Eva Braun with her Führer.”
Not that her exact location is a sure thing, with reports pointing to her either being in Switzerland or an underground bunker in Siberia’s Altai Mountains.
Putin, known to have decried those who “with their snotty noses and erotic fantasies prowl into other people’s lives”, has not managed to quell rumours that Kabaeva continues to be Russia’s secret first lady, and is paid a £7,7 million salary for her job controlling a pro-Kremlin media group.
She once lived a relatively low-key life with professional-sports playing parents and was described as a “sweet girl – simple, nice and friendly” by a source who knew her in the mid-Noughties.
Before finding success in politics, she won 14 world championship gymnastics medals, 21 European championship medals, and Olympic gold at the 2004 Athens Games.
In 2001, she was stripped of her world title following a doping conviction.
In her early 20s, Kabaeva was involved romantically with a Moscow-based policeman originally from Georgia.
This cop became a colonel overnight, according to the source, and “got promoted wildly up the ranks” adding that Kabaeva “talked to me about him and looked quite proud”.
And then she met Putin.
According to Dr Elisabeth Schimpfössl, a senior lecturer at Aston University and author of Rich Russians: From Oligarchs to Bourgeoisie, the meeting was through her former coach Irina Viner, who married the oligarch Alisher Usmanov.
Kabaeva broke up with the policeman and then was reported saying that she’d met someone that “I love very much”.
Rather ominously, she also said, “Sometimes you feel so happy that you even feel scared.”
If only she ran with that fear…
These shots show Putin awarding Kabaeva an Order of Friendship (a state decoration) at the Kremlin in 2001:
After meeting the dictator, Kabaeva’s life changed dramatically, which the source suddenly noticed at an awards ceremony in Russia, where Putin himself was present:
She was shocked by how much weight Kabaeva had gained, but a fellow guest told her, “Well, she’s pregnant.” He also told her Kabaeva was in a relationship with Putin.
The source witnessed no physical interaction between the gymnast and Putin that evening, but she noticed the attention Kabaeva was attracting from others: “There was a circle of people staring at her as she twirled around.”
She soon went from modelling and hosting a television chat show called Steps to Success, to quitting parliament and taking control of the pro-Kremlin National Media Group in 2014, which gave her that massive salary.
Kabaeva then dipped in and out of the public eye, once reportedly spotted in a wedding dress having just married Putin, and rumours abound that she has given birth to four of Putin’s children.
The most recent sighting of her was in December, dancing in a golden dress with a fleet of limousines parked at her disposal and security guards protecting her with machine guns.
