While MacKenzie Scott is donating large funds to nonprofit organisations that build “homes, communities and most of all, hope,” her ex-husband Jeff Bezos is trying to get off the planet, or something to that effect.
When it comes to their billion-dollar net worths, we already know that Scott puts Bezos to shame by giving away sizeable chunks of her money to help people over and over again.
Scott signed the Giving Pledge, which means she is among the billionaires who have promised to donate more than half their wealth before they die.
She left with 4% of Amazon’s shares after her divorce from Bezos, which at the time was valued at around $36 billion:
At present, Forbes has Scott’s net worth at $48 billion, “a disproportionate amount of money to share,” in her words.
Staying true to her word, she has just donated $436 million (around R6,5 billion) to Habitat for Humanity International and its 84 affiliates.
The organisation revealed the good news on Tuesday, mentioning that the “gift is designed to help alleviate the global housing shortage and promote equitable access to affordable housing”, reported The New York Times:
The organisation said that it would use $25 million of the donation over the next three to four years to create more affordable housing and help “the millions of individuals increasingly shut out of the housing market.”
“With this donation, Habitat is well positioned to meaningfully advocate for the systemic and societal changes needed to improve equitable access to affordable housing,” Jonathan Reckford, chief executive of Habitat for Humanity, said in the statement.
The New York Post has more:
Reckford said Habitat for Humanity will use Scott’s donation of unrestricted funds to increase the supply of affordable housing, especially in communities of color.
Though they approach the problem in varying ways, most local affiliates will pursue projects in their communities, while the international group will focus on broader advocacy and efforts to build homes for working-class families.
Even though 51-year-old Scott has given away loads of money so far – $8,8 billion in total by February, which included $1,7 billion donated to a long list of institutions and causes such as historically Black colleges and universities, organisations that support women’s rights and L.G.B.T.Q. equality, and efforts to fight climate change and racial inequity – her stocks keep soaring.
On the plus side, more money to give away, right?
