Boris Becker should have developed a relatively thick skin over the years.
His infamous tryst with a waitress in the broom closet of a London restaurant remains tabloid fodder (it’s how he became a father for the third time), compounded by the fact that his pregnant wife had just gone to hospital as she was having contractions.
Then there was the whole Central African Republic (CAR) diplomat debacle, with the German former tennis star doing everything in his power to minimise the damage caused by his filing for bankruptcy.
He was declared bankrupt in June 2017, and yesterday his trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court kicked off. He is charged with 24 counts under the Insolvency Act relating to the period between May and October 2017, for failing to disclose certain assets to settle his debts.
Becker, pictured above arriving in court with his partner, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, is in for a torrid time. Here’s The Telegraph:
Becker hid two Wimbledon trophies and an Olympic gold medal after he was ordered to hand over property to pay his debts, a court has heard…
In addition to his trophies and medals, Mr Becker is accused of concealing a Chelsea flat, two German properties and approximately £1.8 million…
The jury, comprising 11 men and one woman, heard that “Mr Becker acted dishonestly in a number of ways”.
In order to hide certain funds, it’s alleged he transferred sizeable amounts of money to bank accounts linked with ex-wife Barbara Becker and estranged wife Sharlely “Lilly” Becker.
The German has denied the charges and is out on bail during the trial.
His bail conditions mean he has to live in and sleep at his address in Battersea, south London, and notify the Insolvency Service in advance if he wants to leave the country at any point.
Rebecca Chalkley, who is prosecuting for the Insolvency Service, said Becker broke the “bankruptcy bargain, or bankrupt’s promise” when he failed to give a full account of his assets.
The trial is expected to last for up to three weeks, and the full extent of Becker’s finances will be laid bare for all to see.
