The ingredients for this new erotic thriller are certainly intriguing.

Adapted from a Patricia Highsmith novel (The Talented Mr Ripley) and from a director who made his name with a certain kind of sexy thriller, Deep Water centres on a sexually-charged, mind-game riddled marriage between Vic (Ben Affleck) and Melinda (Ana de Armas) Van Allen.

Zach Helm (Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium) and Sam Levinson (Euphoria) are also involved in the making of this film, altogether creating something on the “edge of trash and art” per Polygon.

Affleck did mention towards the end of 2021 that he was over featuring in mainstream blockbusters, and liked “something else”. That appears to be a sort of psychological film along the lines of Gone Girl, but far sexier.

In fact, due to Deep Water‘s heavy adult content, including nudity and violence, it was tipping towards being unreleasable:

For awhile there, it wasn’t clear whether the new film from Adrian Lyne (9 1/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction) would ever see the light of day.

Blame the Disney-Fox acquisition, and a hesitation to sully a family-friendly brand with steamy content.

But in February, Hulu announced that Deep Water would in fact be released soon, sharing a new trailer to make it official:

The film takes us into the dangerous mind games that the couple plays and what happens to the people that get caught up in them, per the official synopsis:

“[Their] marriage is crumbling under the weight of resentment, jealousy, and mistrust. As their mutual provocations and mind games escalate, things quickly turn into a deadly game of cat and mouse as Melinda’s extramarital dalliances start going missing.”

Ben and Ana became so entangled during the making of this film that they even started an off-screen romance, but that ended shortly thereafter.

Dark Water will be on Hulu from March 18.
