Elvis has not left the building.
The Oscar-nominated visionary who brought us many stylistic and excessive musically-inclined films from the past (think Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, and The Great Gatsby) is bringing Elvis Presley back.
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is coming to the big screen and it has all the hip-swinging, rock-and-roll intensity that skyrocketed the superstar to fame in the first place.
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the extravagant biopic, starring Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as the rock-and-roll legend complete with his “trademark drawl and glorious, fervor-inducing hip-shimmying”.
Mashable notes that Butler himself sings some of Elvis’ classic tunes.
But it is not all partying and dancing in this biopic, which also sheds light on the complicated 20-year relationship between Elvis and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks.
We see Elvis kickstart his career as the crooning and gyrating superstar, writes Polygon, from humble beginnings in a Mississippi church choir, but slowly getting more and more disillusioned as time goes by and the American cultural landscape changes.
Elvis looks to be an absolute banger with top-notch cinematography, set to premiere in theatres on June 24:
