On a personal front, I am bitterly disappointed that the winner of the R167 million PowerBall jackpot is not me.
I bought tickets, so at least I know I threw my name into the ring.
As for 2oceansvibe’s disappointment, we are firm believers in the fact that anybody who wins a substantial amount in a lottery should immediately cease working.
Preferably, this is to be done via a short message to your superiors stipulating that you are now rich beyond your wildest dreams and any form of employment is beneath you.
Enter the 67-year-old Ballito businessman who won the R167 million jackpot last Friday, having spent R150 on the quick pick option.
Here’s News24:
According to the man, who is an avid golfer, he plans to settle his debt, make several investments and donate some of his winnings to charity.
Besides wanting to travel, he has no plans to make any drastic changes to his lifestyle.
Bonus points on the charity front but it’s all undone by “no plans to make any drastic changes to his lifestyle”.
Why bother winning R167 million, then? Rather give the money to someone who intends to make terrible life choices so that we at least get a Showmax series out of it down the line.
The words ‘Ballito’ and ‘avid golfer’ make me think he was doing well before the huge windfall. Then there’s the fact that he is said to enjoy taking walks on the beach. We all do, but you’re stinking rich now, shake things up.
The man has claimed the second-highest PowerBall jackpot win since February 2019. On that occasion, someone won R232 million and there was also an R158 million jackpot struck in July of last year.
It’s worth mentioning that the winner of the R232 million stated at the time that he had no intention of leaving his job. We hope he has since come to his senses.
South Africa’s latest winner said he found out he had won when he checked his numbers online. He then kept his ticket in a safe and told only his immediate family, before coming forward to the Ithuba regional office in Durban on Tuesday.
We implore all future winners of lottery jackpots to do the right thing and begin living the holiday immediately.
This madness must stop.
