Sure, the Super Bowl is about sports.
But it is also about the commercials, and this year’s ads are packing some serious star quality.
That includes the ever-popular duo of Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart.
Scroll down to watch them make a few cannabis-related inuendoes together in the ad for Bic Lighters.
Yes, we’re living in that world now.
Also, one in which Lindsay Lohan is making a comeback, former NFL linebacker Jerod Mayo hits Kim Kardashian’s new boyfriend to the ground, and Dr. Evil is still laughing away with his pinkie in the corner of his mouth.
Although that last one feels less like a full ad for General Motors and more like a half threat to humanity.
Apparently, companies were happy to hand over at least $6,5 million (close to R100 million) for a 30-second slot per NewsAU, which might just be the most insane thing about these ads.
Anyway, there’s a lot to unpack, so let’s get cracking with 2022’s most outrageous Super Bowl adverts:
Here’s Martha Stewart raising her eyebrows at Snoop’s mention of “bowl” and a “smell”:
This one is for fans of 1998 cult hit The Big Lebowski, featuring Steve Buscemi behind the shoe counter of a bowling alley called “Superior Bowl” for a Michelob Ultra beer ad.
The ad shows a bunch of sports champions getting strike after strike, but still, the game only really begins when Serena Williams walks in:
Next up is Jerod Mayo tackling Pete Davidson, who admits he’s “very hittable” in this ad for Hellmann’s Mayo:
For Amazon Alexa’s seventh Super Bowl appearance, Scarlett Johansson and husband Colin Jost (better known together as “ScarJost”) imagine what it would be like if the smart assistant could actually read minds:
The best Mean Girl on the block, Lindsay Lohan, appears in this ad for Planet Fitness proving how she is slowly but surely trading “DUIs for DIYs” or something of the sort:
The Lay’s chips ad might just be the edgiest of the year, with Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen reminiscing about their “golden” bromance adventures, plus a strange twist towards the end:
There are a couple of other ads to enjoy here, including Guy Fieri, Schitt’s Creek‘s co-creator and actor Eugene Levy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Zeus buying a macchiato.
To finish, your boy Dr. Evil:
Yeah, the Super Bowl is a lot.
