56-year-old Daniel Smit (above) was arrested last week in connection with the disappearance of 13-year-old Jerobiojin van Wyk.
Police say they found human remains, including an ear, intestines, and a kidney, hidden in sewage pipes on Smit’s property.
Van Wyk is accused of stealing mangoes from Smit’s residence in Klawer, on the Cape West Coast, on February 2. Smit was said to have chased van Wyk, who has not been since.
It’s not yet been established if the remains are those of van Wyk but admissions via Santie Human, Smit’s attorney, paint a picture of a very troubled man.
Here’s IOL:
[Human] said her client had confessed to her. Human also said Smit was introduced to a cult at a very young age, when he learnt how to dispose of a body.
“My client got involved in the occult when he was 13 years old. In Vredendal he met someone from out of town who gave him stuff about the occult to read. He felt he belonged – part of it.
“When he was 19, an occult group from Sea Point showed him how to kill with very little blood spilt and to incinerate the body and to throw any remains in the sea.
“My client is not a sick person, as in mental health problems. He has spiritual problems… He wants to be delivered from the evil spirits.”
Human stated that her client had confessed to killing four people in Sea Point, although there was no indication of when the four people had been murdered.
There are definitely shades of the infamous Krugersdorp Killings to this story.
Smit appeared yesterday in the Klawer Magistrate’s Court to face charges of murder, kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and defeating the ends of justice:

Outside the court, community members protested and tensions boiled over.

Community leader Billy Claasen said they suspect Smit may be responsible for other children who have gone missing in the area.
Human said she has “arranged for a well-known spiritual leader in our community, Jan Oosthuizen, to assist” with delivering Smit “from the evil spirits”.
Smit abandoned his bid to be released on bail and will remain in custody.
The case has been postponed until April 26, 2022, for further investigation.
